8th Sunday after Pentecost - Flip Flop Sunday!

This week was Flip-Flop Sunday and we had Pastor Drew McCaffery with us preaching. His sermon reflected on Jesus’ parable of the weeds to remind us that only God can judge what is wheat or weed, and that we are called to practice patience, extend grace, and share God’s love broadly like seeds carried into the world.

Reflection Questions:

1. When have you been tempted to judge a person or situation too quickly, only to discover there was more to the story?

2. How does the farmer’s patience in allowing the wheat and weeds to grow together challenge your understanding of God’s grace?

3. Who are the people our society, or even our churches, sometimes labels as “weeds”? How does Jesus’ teaching encourage us to view them differently?

4. How might our own biases influence the way we distinguish between “good” and “bad,” “worthy” and “unworthy”?

5. The dandelion is often seen as a weed, yet it has beauty and value. Can you think of a person, experience, or circumstance that others overlooked but God used for good?

6. How can our congregation become more fully an extension of God's love rather than a place that unintentionally creates barriers to belonging?

Prayer:

Gracious God, you call us all beloved and teach us to trust your mercy rather than our own judgments; help us to share your grace freely, like seeds carried on the wind, welcoming all people into your love. Through Jesus Christ, who gathers us as one people and nurtures us with hope, Amen.
