5th Sunday after Pentecost

Pastor Amanda connected the history of the Stonewall Riots and ongoing struggles for justice with Jesus’ call in Matthew 10 to practice a radical, “holy welcome” that embraces all people, especially those marginalized, recognizing everyone as beloved children of God.

Reflection Questions:

1. Who are the “strangers” in your life or community that you find hardest to welcome, and why?
2. How does Jesus’ teaching about welcoming others challenge your current attitudes or actions?
3. In what ways can Rejoice more fully live out a “holy welcome” without limits?
4. How do historical events like Stonewall and Juneteenth shape your understanding of justice and inclusion today?
5. What practical steps can you take this week to show welcome and care to someone who feels marginalized?
6. Where do you see a gap between the values of “liberty and justice for all” and reality, and how might you respond to that as a person of faith?

Prayer:

Loving and gracious God, you gather us in not because of who we are, but because of who you are, merciful, just, and full of steadfast love. Open our hearts by your Spirit to practice your holy welcome,
that we may receive the stranger, honor the neighbor, and stand alongside those who are marginalized and oppressed. Remind us that all are claimed in your grace, all are made in your image, and all are invited to your table. Send us out in courage and hope to bear witness to your love in word and deed, trusting not in our own righteousness, but in your promise that makes all things new; through Jesus Christ, who welcomes us still. Amen.
